BROOME – DAY 2

Day 2 in beautiful Broome and despite it being stinking hot and humid we still had a great time.

We took a trip to Town Beach again for breakfast overlooking the bay. This restaurant was frequently used by us when we were here before. It is now under different ownership but still a great place for brekky. 5 years ago it was known as The Irukandji and for some crazy reason the new owners scrapped the name and it’s now simply called Town Beach Café. How boring!

We like to live on the edge!

After breakfast we went to a place called Gantheaume Point.

This gorgeous place is steeped in history with a landowner from days gone by crafted a small rock-pool for his wife who suffered severe arthritis. This pool still exists today and is well known in the region as Anastasias’ Pool. It’s a great spot for a dip – the ultimate infinity pool I guess.

Personally I preferred the pool next to it; this one was much more fun! One has to be very careful when the tide is coming in though; and the tide comes in pretty fast in this neck of the woods.

The whole area is simply stunning though and well worth a visit.

After our swim we went into the town and took a drive around to look at some of the architecture.

We both love the houses here but cannot understand why most of them aren’t built on stilts to help the air-flow and keep them cooler.

Still, who are we to argue!

Boy! I could sure live here even though I know I’d bitch at the weather during the wet season.

In the evening we went to Matsos’ for an early dinner before going to the Sun Cinema for a movie.

We watched Lincoln, not a great movie but a good one. Well worth watching.

The cinema is the oldest working outdoor cinema dating back to 1933!

One still sits in the deckchairs to watch the movie and you’re advised to ‘bring your own cushions. Good advice, they were needed since the deck-chairs ain’t comfortable after a few minutes.

There was something ‘quaint’ about watching a movie and being distracted as a plane fly’s in low overhead as it comes into land at the nearby airport! Irritating but quaint.

We head out tomorrow to head nearer to home. The next stopping point will be Exmouth for a couple of days but we doubt we will make it in one day – it’s around 1200 clicks away so we will be taking an overnight stop ‘somewhere’ en route! Not sure where yet so I’ll keep ya posted.

SPLISH SPLASH

All I wanted was a chance to sit and think ........

Sit and rest my weary travel bones …………

Cooling off in the midday sun …………………

Just sitting and thinking about nothing in particular ……………….

That’s what happens when you sit minding your own business ………

Along comes something to spoil your train of thought ......

Now, where was I?

Oh! That's right. Sitting and thinking ...........

BROOME – DAY 1

We are currently in Broome having a 3 night ‘break’ from our travels.

Our unit here is booked and in use but we did get ourselves booked into another vacant unit at ‘a favourable rate’. Actually, when I do the math it works out that I am staying here for free since the rent from our unit is covering my rent in this one. And I’m not paying for the ‘extras’ so it’s win-win.

I love Broome and to me it’s one of the best places on earth; even if it is still bloody hot and humid!

One of the best features here is the outdoor shower. It is different and exhilarating being able to shower outdoors knowing that we have full privacy and security.

A few feedback reports from guests staying here are negative regarding the shower but the vast majority love it and quote it as a positive feature of the resort.

All I can say is that we love it and since it never gets cold here in Broome it seems to me to be a positive feature++!

It is great to see the place being really well maintained and managed; it is hard to believe that the place is nearly 7 years old!

Our first day here we just chilled out and went for a swim in one of the 2 pools here. Julies’ happy!!

Dinner was at Matsos – in my mind the best beer and the best food. Matsos is a small independent brewery and delightful eatery. It is locked into the hippy/backpacker market and has not changed since we first came here 6 years ago.

Town beach is paradise with a twist!

The weather is hot and humid, just inviting one to swim in the coastal waters. Thereby lies the rub; it is not safe to swim here in the wet season due to dangerous jelly-fish – Irukandji and Box Jellyfish. It’s as if we were given paradise and then told “You can’t use it. Ha Ha!”

Still, we have the resort pool to fall back on.

We took a drive out to the Port area of Broome today. Again it is a spectacular area and so peaceful. How anyone can think of mining and gas exploration here beggars belief.

The rock formations are beautiful and just invite one to sit and relax.

Lunch was in the ‘Kool Spot’ café; I have to admit I’ve yet to have a bad meal here in Broome.

Another favourite eating place of ours was the ‘Old Zoo Restaurant’. This has now combined with Zeebar Restaurant. It’s still a good diner and we had dinner there but it wasn’t as good as before.

I love their Oyster Shooter, severed as a shooter in lime, chilli and vodka. Yum!

That’s it for day one. More in the next blog.
