From leaving the Panama Canal our journey took us North West
towards Huatulco, Mexico. The original itinerary was for a stop at Acapulco but
this was changed; I believe because it was becoming dangerous for tourists.
This was not the case for Huatulco; the place was gorgeous and
not being a major ship stop was much less commercialized.
Once the ships formalities it was ‘off we trot’ to explore yet
another foreign town only ever read about (or not read about in this case).
The morning started with a couple of hours’ free time to
explore before an organised tour to visit the town and to see a ‘Mexican
Fiesta’ show.
The town itself was quaint and we were not inundated with
touts trying to flog us cheap trash. A real bonus.
Many of the stores near the port were ‘vetted’ by Cunard and
as such offered a guarantee of ‘fair prices’.
We loved the Harbour Masters’ transport! A good sturdy vehicle
for sure!
We grabbed ourselves a small snack from the local stores as we
wondered the streets. Not that we were hungry; just greedy.
Eventually we re-joined the ship and the tour group to
continue on to the Mexican Fiesta part of the tour.
With hindsight we would probably have given this a miss and
saved a bit of money. It was relatively interesting but very basic and our time
would probably have been better spent touring independently.
I have to admit that the costumes were bright and colourful
and I’ll give ‘em 6/10 for effort!
It was only an hour long and the rest of our day until 5-30 pm
was ours so we skipped the return trip to the ship and took off for a look
around the town and to find the beach.
The beach it might add was opposite the Queen and easy to
reach so we were not concerned with missing the boat!
The Margaritas sold on the beach were yummy! I could have had
a few of them but thought better of it.
All too soon the time drifted on and it was time to return to
the ship ready to set sail for San Francisco.
