Day 1 – Poor Julie stuck in bed with food poisoning and we’re
supposed to be going to the Grand Canyon. After much discussion (argument) we
agreed that I would go.
It was an early morning start, with a 5.45 am pick-up from the
hotel ready for a 3 hour drive to the Canyon.
The coach trip alone was a worthwhile experience and we saw a
different view of America; away from the major tourist spots.
The canyon itself is magnificent and our visit was to the West
Rim; I’ve been advised that it pales compared to the South Rim. Even so it
was awesome to see it and photos and TV coverage doesn’t even come close to
revealing its’ magnificence.
Our first stop was Eagle Point and the Skywalk.
The Skywalk was a real experience; Julie would have freaked
had she been there. She hates heights and the Skywalk is glass bottomed and
around a kilometre above the canyon floor!
Our second stop was Guano Point. In spite of all the
commercialism it is a really spectacular place. I loved it and wouldn’t have
missed it for the world.
When I returned to the hotel Julie was still quite unwell. She
had slept most of the day and was really feeling crappy so it was a quiet
evening in and an early night all round.
The next morning Julie was feeling a little better and
managing to take a light diet of water and dry crackers! I had a trip booked
for a helicopter ride through the canyon and a floor landing. So, off I went
and spent the morning in a ‘copter to the foot of the canyon and a champagne breakfast.
Julie was feeling better by the time I returned at lunch time
so we had a light lunch in our room and then spent a quiet afternoon resting
before a planned evening show in the Wynn Theatre. Unfortunately photos’ were
not allowed.
The show itself was Le Reve (The Dream) and was akin to Cirque
de Soleil on steroids. It was one of the most amazing shows I have ever
experienced.
We then had dinner in the Palazzo and a stroll round the
lights of the strip.
Vegas is good for what it is; a city that takes excess to
excess. A great place to visit but not somewhere we would want to live. At
least Julie managed to salvage a bit of her trip to Vegas and can now say “I’ve
been there”!
Thankfully she is feeling better now and able to enjoy herself
again. In the morning we’re off to Anaheim and Disneyland for 4 nights and
three days in the amusement parks!
