DARWIN

We have just spent the past 4 nights in Darwin.

In a nutshell; I loved the place; hated the weather!

Our hotel was perfectly situated and we were able to take brief strolls into town. Luckily we didn’t have to spend long in the open air before we could dive into air conditioning.

We had a villa rather than a room and it was typically tropical in appearance. It was more of a resort than a hotel so very befitting of the environment.

I could not live here because of the horrendous humidity. Being outside for 10 minutes resulted in us being soaked in sweat and just looking for somewhere with air conditioning.

Thankfully the hotel had a pool and we spent long periods just lounging in the pool trying to keep cool.

So, I’ve had my whinge and now for the positives! The coastal scenery here is stunning. Unfortunately, this time of year we were not able to swim in the sea due to dangerous jelly fish and the like.

We took a stroll down to the local ‘Wave Pool’. This is the local swimming hole with the pool providing waves for the swimmers in a safe environment.

We spent most of the day here and came out well and truly wrinkled!!! Just like a pair of prunes.

Everything here is so lush and green, one of the great advantages of coming at the end of the wet season.

Much of Darwin was re-built after the 1974 Christmas Day cyclone.

However, they have maintained much of the war history with Darwin being well and truly bombed in WW11.

Julie managed to catch up with one of her relatives who she hadn’t seen for over 25 years. Julie used to live in Darwin having moved there 6 months after the Cyclone Tracey in ’74. She was there for 15 years so knew the place a little bit.

On Saturday we start the final leg of our great adventure. We pick up a motorhome in Darwin and will spend the next 14 days driving back to Perth.
