GHAN – KATHERINE

We arrived at Katherine at 9.00 am, this being the last stop of our trip on the Ghan.

We are scheduled for a 3 and a half hour stop; just enough time for an organised tour and trip down the Katherine Gorge. Actually there is not time for such a trip; the best we managed was a trip along 2 of the 13 gorges present in this area.

We were met by a coach and whisked off to our little tour boat and spent the next 2 hours in the Katherine Gorge.

We wouldn’t have missed it for quids; the area is so beautiful. Also, once in the Gorge it is so peaceful with only the sounds of the birds (and of course the boat engines).

The 2 or so hours we had to sail the Gorge was over way too fast and before we knew it we were back on the coach for the return to the train.

The rest of the train trip was over 5 hours later and we pulled into Darwin Station on time at 5.30 pm.

The Ghan service included a complementary transfer to our hotel so we were checked in and settled by 7.00 pm.
